When is a bundle worth the cost?

Disney recently announced that its Disney+ service will be available through a rather interesting bundle that includes Hulu on-demand and ESPN+ as part of the bundle. Bundles are becoming more common in the cord-cutting market, and we should expect Disney's move to make them even more common in the future as well.

But when are bundles actually worth the purchase?

1. Bundles are worth it when they actually save you money

Occasionally, we come across bundles that sound interesting but don't actually save you any money. Instead, they save you a few minutes of extra time or reduce how much locations you have to go to for content.

Then there are the bundles that do actually save money. Take T-Mobile's Magenta Plus phone plan. The plan is $43 per line, but bundles with a Netflix Standard account ($12.99 per month). If you're already paying for Netflix and a phone plan separately, this bundle would likely save you money.

The new Disney+ bundle is similar. Each of the services individually cost more to purchase separately ($7.99 for Disney+, $4.99 for ESPN+, $5.99 for Hulu, or $18.97 total). But Disney is offering the bundle at $12.99 per month, which is essentially like throwing in ESPN+ for free.

2. Bundles are worth it when you want the services offered

That said, the cost-saving won't make sense if you don't want or need the bundled services. For example, if you want just want ESPN+ and Hulu on-demand, you'd save money by ignoring the bundle all together and signing up for both separately.
