Streamer's Spotlight: What is ATSC 3.0?

Over-the-air broadcast signals and receiving devices all follow a technological standard (just like Wi-Fi). That standard is determined by the Advanced Television Systems Committee or ATSC. The ATSC developed the framework for its newest technological update to digital broadcast signals (3.0), which we'll see come into fruition in 2020. By combining OTA signals with your home internet connection, ATSC 3.0 promises some huge upgrades to OTA broadcasts

But what can we expect with ATSC 3.0?

Here Comes the Better Picture Quality

Most OTA broadcasts currently max out at 1080p. With the ATSC 3.0 standard, however, you'll be able to experience stunning 4K HD broadcasts over the air. At present, 4K HD is fairly rare even with traditional cable TV, and heavy on the data with on-demand services. But with broadcast networks updating and broadcasting in 4K HD, you'll be able to enjoy a significant amount of live TV with supremely high quality.

Better Signal Quality with a Smaller Antenna

A huge benefit to ATSC 3.0 is better signal strength. You'll be able to get more channels in higher quality with a smaller antenna. For those living in apartments, this will be a huge boon. But it's also a boon for anyone who tends to struggle to get a wide range of channels due to geographic obstacles.

Sound Quality Improved

Better signal quality and strength also means better sound. ATSC 3.0 allows for popular new high-quality sound formats, including Dolby Atmos and DST:X.

Digital Interactivity

Because the OTA signal is boosted by your home data connection, ATSC 3.0 devices will have a new level of interactivity that was previously unavailable with the 1.0 standard. In particular, many developers may be rushing to create digital apps specifically for ATSC 3.0 devices, which means a new way to watch and interact with your live TV content from over the air.
