Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:

How to Spend Less on Streaming Services

There's a shift in the streaming market that's probably a bit troubling to cord-cutters:

rising prices.

This unavoidable trend means the prices you're paying for streaming services are higher than they were just a few years ago, and they're going to keep going up.

However, you may be able to lower how much you pay for some services by using a few tricks.

1. Cancel your account - then get a discount from customer service to stay

Some streaming services, like DirecTV Now and

, do everything in their power to keep you on board. They even employ customer retention policies when you try to cancel your account, which can include offering a free or even a slightly lower rate for you to stay on for another month or two.

2. Share your account and split the cost

Some streaming services, like

, allow you to split the cost across a number of paid accounts. You may also want to share your account and have a few family or friends Venmo you their share of the bill.

3. Drop any services you aren't using enough, or suspend your account

Sometimes, it's just time to let go. If you aren't using a streaming service often enough, you may just want to unsubscribe. Alternatively, many streaming services now let you suspend your account instead of canceling. That way, you can easily re-up, binge the content you want, and suspend the account again until you need it.

This is a good option seasonal sports viewing through live TV services, or for streaming services that drop original content you want to see only once or twice a year.
