Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:

How Do I Find The Right Streaming Services?

Perhaps the most difficult part of cord-cutting is finding which services carry the TV channels and on-demand TV episodes you most want. There are a few ways to go about this.

The hard way is to manually search through each service available, which can be extremely time-consuming. The easy way, however, is to use a few tools that will filter those services for you and give you the info you need within seconds.

1. Start by listing your "must-have" channels

To figure out how many services you absolutely need, start by creating a list of your "must-have" channels. These are going to be the channels you simply can't live without (for me, that's HGTV and increasingly FreeForm). That can include sports networks, entertainment channels, local broadcast networks like CBS, and news networks.

2. Next, check which services carry the channels you need

Once you've determined which channels you can't live without, check to see which services have the channels you need. The fastest way to do this is to use the

. This tool lets you enter the channels you want most from a live TV streaming service (as well as any other key features you need), then displays which services carry those channels.

3. Pick the service(s) that carry the channels you want

Next, pick the services that carry the channels you want. With any luck, you'll find just one service has all of the channels you need. Otherwise, you may need to sign up to two services for maximum coverage or refine your list of "must-have" networks.

+

is a popular combination, for example, as YouTube TV has a large package, but has some gaps in the entertainment channels it offers.

4. Create a list of the TV shows you most want to watch

Now that you have your TV channels covered, create a list of your "must-have" TV shows. Those are the TV shows you're most interested in watching.

5. Check which streaming services carry the shows you need

We recommend using

or

to determine which streaming services carry the TV shows you want. You may find Hulu has everything you need (which ultimately makes

a great TV option), or you'll find your favorite shows are available across different services, like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

6. Avoid service creep!

"Service creep" is what we call it when the number of streaming services you're signed up to slowly increases over time. This is actually a growing problem in the cord-cutting community as many different content rights holders move to create their own streaming services.

CBS, for example, keeps all its content to itself through

, Disney's new

is launching in a few months, and even

just launched its own streaming service. The result is more streaming services cord-cutters need to sign up for, but it's probably not sustainable. We suspect a reckoning of sorts in the near future and that many services will start shutting down. We'll keep you updated when that happens.
