Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:

How to Maximize Your Use of Offline Downloading

Multiple streaming services, including Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu on-demand, all offer downloads for offline viewing. But how does this work? And can you keep these videos forever?

1. What is Offline Viewing? Why use it?

Offline viewing is the option to view your streaming service content on your device when you don't have an internet connection. This is a great feature for when you're traveling, especially by plane, or when you're anywhere else with a lot of time on your hands and no internet.

You may also find offline viewing is especially useful if your home internet has data caps. Streaming media in high quality can use a large amount of data. However, if you download content on public Wi-Fi, for example, you can save yourself the cost of the data while still enjoying your favorite shows and movies.

2. How Do I Download Content for Offline Viewing?

Every streaming service that offers offline viewing has a slightly different method of delivery. For example, through Disney+, you'll find a download button next to your favorite shows and movies (it's a down arrow). Disney+ allows you to download entire seasons at once. Meanwhile, Netflix requires you to open the TV show episodes selection screen, then click the down arrow button to download. On Netflix, you need to download each episode individually, so you may find it a bit more tedious.

3. How Do I Access Downloaded Content?

To access your downloaded TV shows and movies, open your respective streaming apps, then go to the dedicated downloads section. As long as you've downloaded content, it should be available to view through your device. Because it's designed for offline viewing, this option will be available even without an internet connection or log in!

4. Can I Keep Downloaded Content Forever?

Unfortunately not. Most streaming services that allow offline viewing through digital downloads maintain an expiration date on your videos. For example, Netflix downloaded content often carries a timestamp that indicates how long until the downloaded content automatically deletes. This could be anywhere from 48 hours to several days or weeks.
