Streamer's Spotlight: Most People Are Sharing Passwords, But Security Issues Abound
Have you shared a streaming service password, or asked someone to share one with you? There's a good chance you'll say yes to either of those two questions. We conducted a survey of 1,000 streaming service users about their password sharing habits. The
, especially from a security standpoint.
Almost every Netflix user is sharing their account with someone
Our survey found that nearly 73% of Netflix users share a password. This is not too surprising, as Netflix is the largest streaming platform of its kind. Amazon Prime Video is also widely shared, with just over 62% of its users admitting to sharing their passwords.
Further down the list are Hulu (39.8%), Disney+ (23.6%) and YouTube TV (12.1%). Some of these numbers aren't too surprising. YouTube TV, for example, lets you share your account, but the other users need to live in your household.
The lack of password sharing among Disney+ users is a bit of a surprise, however, considering Disney+ offers 4 simultaneous streams per account.
Most of us are sharing with family members and significant others
Sharing among family members is most common on Netflix (67.1%) and YouTube TV (32.4%). Amazon Prime Video and Hulu users tend to almost evenly split in sharing between family members and significant others.
Disney+ users are slightly more likely to share with their significant others, with 61.7% opting to hand over the password to their love interest.
The present danger with password sharing
Our survey revealed the very real danger that comes with password sharing. A shocking 45.8% or nearly half of respondents who said they were using someone else's streaming account also admitted to sharing or offering that password to someone else. Meanwhile, almost 80% of account owners who shared passwords reported not their password recipients don't share those passwords.
These numbers reflect not only a breach of trust between those who share passwords and those who use those shared passwords but also a major security breach. Many people use the same passwords across different accounts, making the original account holder even more vulnerable once that password is passed on to a third party that he or she may not know or trust.
Over 70% of respondents admitted using the same password for their social media as they do for their streaming service accounts. Over 46% use the same password for their email, and over 28% use the same password for their online bank account. These lapses in extra precautions mean many individuals who share passwords are leaving themselves to open to identity theft and fraud.
