Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:
How to Secure Your Streaming Accounts
One of the best features available through cord-cutting services is simultaneous streaming. The option to stream from more screens at the same time makes it easy to share with family and friends. But it also presents a security challenge, as you may have others hijacking your account without your knowledge. Here are a few ways to make sure your accounts are secure.
1. Check your active connections and devices
Streaming services that let you share an account also usually have a feature in the account settings called "Device Management. For example, you can find the Netflix
. This feature typically lets you see how many devices are actively connected to your account. We recommend checking every so often, and if you see an unfamiliar device connecting in from an unfamiliar location, disconnect it in your user settings.
2. Use a strong password
Streaming passwords can get stolen in a myriad of ways, including fake websites set up to steal passwords, or just by brute-force attacks. We recommend you use a strong password with your account. Use a password generator to create a unique password, and store your password in a password manager with verified security.
3. Connect to your streaming services in incognito mode
Watching your streaming services on a laptop or desktop computer? Connect through incognito mode or a private browsing session. This will prevent your browser from creating a session cookie, which makes it more difficult for anyone to steal your account information through session hijacking or other hacking attempts.
You can't gain that same protection when using streaming devices, however, so make sure your home network is adequately secured and password protected, as well.
