Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:

How Much are You Willing to Pay For Original Content?

This week, HBO offered more details about its upcoming streaming service, HBO Max. The service is set to launch in spring of 2020. Below, we'll explore more about this service, and seek to answer one question: Are you willing to pay for it?

1. HBO Max may cost $17 per month

To note, AT&T has not announced how much it's charging for this upcoming service. However, rumors suggest that the service will cost $17 per month, which would make it one of the most expensive on-demand streaming services on the market, if not the most expensive. By comparison, Netflix's most expensive streaming package costs $15 per month and offers multiple benefits, including account sharing and 4K streaming.

2. HBO Max will launch 10,000 hours of content

AT&T announced the new service will launch with 10,000 hours of content. That includes HBO's library of shows, such as

WestWorld

,

Chernobyl

, and

Game of Thrones.

HBO now owns WarnerMedia and all of WarnerMedia's properties, which means the content library will include content from a number of cable networks, including TBS, TNT, and TruTV. It will also be the new home of hit sitcom

Friends

, which is officially leaving Netflix in 2020.

3. HBO Max will launch with new originals

AT&T announced 9 original shows and series for its new HBO Max service between 2020 and 2021, which includes a new

Dune

series, a series based on H.P Lovecraft tales and produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, an alternative history series called

The Plot Against America

and a few more.

Will it be worth the price?

Will HBO Max be worth the price of admission, if it indeed launches at $17 per month? That depends. If you love HBO's original content, and you're already subscribed to HBO Now at $15 per month, the two dollars per month extra might be worth the cost. However, HBO will have stiff competition, as Disney's new Disney+ service is launching this fall, while Apple+ will also hit the market soon after.

If you're like more cord-cutters, paying for multiple streaming services is becoming a burden. And since most of us are already paying for Netflix and other streaming services, it may be time to cut something from our regular monthly bill.
