Flixed Newsletter - COVID-19 Wrecks 'Mad Men' Viewership

Issue 13: March 30, 2020

These are strange and anxious times. With so many of us home, streaming on Netflix has never been higher. But we're also starting to see that what people prefer to watch during moments like these can change dramatically. This week, we examine a few interesting streaming since COVID-19 quarantines began in full force in the US, and its interesting impact on a few different popular staples. Read on to find out more in this week's Stream Report.

Streamer's Spotlight: Stress Streaming is Killing 'Mad Men', and Other Survey Takeaways

Never have so many people been sitting at home, streaming from Netflix at the same time for an extended period of time. We surveyed people before and after major quarantine implementations went into effect,

'Mad Men' Viewership on Netflix Dropped Nearly 92 Percent

We surveyed over 1,200 people from March 2-3 to discover their streaming habits. At the time, people were worried about the spread of the coronavirus, but almost no states in the US had instituted any lockdown procedures. That week, the two most-streamed shows on Netflix were ones we've already seen reported in the past:

The Office

(8.5% of respondents) and

Mad Men

(6.1% of respondents).

When we surveyed 1,700+ Netflix users from 16-23, the week in which

had already been ordered (or sternly asked) to stay home,

Mad Men

's stats had changed dramatically. While the office still sat at its top spot, only 0.5% of respondents now report viewing

Mad Men

, dropping it to 95th place.

Why the shift?

Mad Men's complex and notably dramatic plot may make it ill-suited for relieving stress during times like these.

Notably, the new Netflix show

Love Is Blind

moved to the #2 spot. It's not unusual for new and highly anticipated Netflix shows to zoom to the top of the viewing list, but just hard and far

Mad Men

plummeted in viewing rankings is revealing on what people prefer to watch when they're anxiety levels are high.

A Few Shows Re-Emerge into the Top 25

Some highly-syndicated and other popular shows zoomed back the list following the quarantine. These include:

  • Parks & Recreation (to #12)

  • Schitt's Creek (to #13)

  • Lucifer (to #16)

  • Black Mirror (to #25)

Comedy and end-times morbidity? These may not be a surprising mixture for our current age.
