Cord-Cutting Tip of the Week:
How to Get Broadcast Networks as a Philo Subscriber
Cord-cutting is all about saving money, so it should come as no surprise that Philo (and to a much lesser degree, AT&T WatchTV) is a popular option among cord-cutters. For
Philo offers 50+ channels, including crowd-favorites like AMC, HGTV, A&E, Discovery, History, and more.
Consequently, that low cost comes at the consequence of two things: sports and broadcast networks. Both sports and local broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, etc.) cost a lot of money for Philo to add to its subscription pack. As such, Philo's focus is only on entertainment channels that are cheap to provide.
Still, if you're dropping cable but don't want to give up your broadcast networks, you still have a few key options to consider.
1. Use an over-the-air antenna
The day of rabbit ears are over, but
antennas are very much alive--and growing in popularity. Cord-cutters can go two routes with these devices as well:
You can purchase a low-cost and super thin indoor antenna, such as the Mohu Leaf
You can purchase an outdoor antenna that requires more additional equipment and setup, but receives a significantly larger number of channels
Most cord-cutters trying out OTA antennas for the first time are often shocked at just how clear the broadcasts are. This is because many OTA channels are broadcast in HD, and some are even coming through in 4K video quality. Importantly, you won't experience the sort of buffering issues that exist with channels streaming over the web.
If you go with a Mohu Leaf or similar device, setup only takes a few minutes. You can also pair your device with an OTA DVR recorder, which uniquely expands your on-demand content options as a Philo or AT&T WatchTV subscriber. But if want the potential to receive dozens more OTA channels, the outdoor antenna may be for you.
Since OTA broadcasts are free to receive, the only cost to you is the equipment. A one-time purchase of an indoor antenna, for example, means you'll be able to get ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS, My20, The CW, and more, for under $30, for the life of the device. To get local broadcast networks through traditional cable, you usually need to pay around $10 per month, making it a much better deal to use an OTA antenna. Even the more expensive outdoor digital OTA antennas will save you money in the long run.
2. Use Locast
If you live in Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, or Denver, you're in luck. You can get local broadcast networks from these cities without paying a dime
.
Locast is a free streaming service that provides OTA channels in all of the above cities (with more being added all the time). The service follows in the footsteps of the ill-fated Aereo service, which did the same thing but was shut down after several lawsuits.
The difference here? Locast is being run as a non-profit. That's
and may be why Locast has
from the same companies that got Aereo shut down. That is, so long as the company can figure out how to earn revenue. At present, Locast is operating at a huge loss, so its time may be limited. With that being the case, we recommend you enjoy this one while it lasts, and if you feel compelled, donate to help the service last longer.
