Free TV Is Taking Off

August 4, 2020

The continued proliferation of paid streaming services is getting a bit out of control. Consequently, there are also more free streaming services on the market than ever, most of which have a fairly good array of content across every genre. Before you go and sign up for yet another paid streaming service, you may want to explore one of the many free options on the market for TV shows and movies.

Streamer's Spotlight: Free Streaming Services for TV Shows and Movies

Paid streaming services seem to be sprouting like mushrooms after a midnight rain. All offer gated content that you won't find anywhere else, which is certainly problematic if you don't want to commit to spending more on content. But just as the paid options have been proliferating, so too have the free options.

Which free options can you get these days? Here's a sample of some of our favorites.

Tubi TV

If you just want a massive amount of content for free, you can't go wrong with Tubi TV. It's the undisputed king of free content streaming right now, with over 19,000 titles. The service's library is movie-centric, as over 17,000 titles in its library are films.

As you might expect, such a large library means a fairly high percentage are of the content is less-than-stellar. Still, over 3,600 titles in the Tubi TV library earned a 7 or higher on IMDb. That includes hit movies like

Kill Bill Volume 1

, and popular shows like

3rd Rock From the Sun.

Vudu Free

More commonly thought of as a place to rent and buy streaming content, Vudu also now has a free, ad-supported library of content. Vudu Free hosts a library with over 5,000 titles. Just under 1,000 of its titles have a 7/10 or higher on IMDb.

CW Seed

CW Seed is the free streaming option available from CW. It's a great place to turn to if you want CW content, but don't have a paid live TV service that offers it. You'll get ad-supported access to over 70 TV shows from CW's cache, including a wide range of DC Comics TV shows.

IMDb TV

Although it only has around 400 titles, over 30% of IMDb TV's library is well-rated content. The service is currently owned by Amazon, so you can access all of its content right from Amazon Prime Video.

Peacock TV

Peacock is one of the newest streaming services to hit the market. Owned and operated by NBCUniversal (which itself is owned by Comcast), Peacock gives you ad-supported access to most of NBC's large library of content, old and new. Peacock was designed to compete directly with CBS All Access, but unlike CBS All Access, Peacock has a free tier.

The service currently has just under 900 titles, over 260 of which have a 7/10 or higher on IMDb. And because NBC is a content producer, much of the content is unavailable anywhere else.
