Paramount+ Is More of the Same...Plus

March 9, 2021

After much commercial fanfare, CBS All Access officially became Paramount+ last week. There's not too much to unpack from the revamp, but if you're considering hopping into the service for the first time, there are a few things worth noting.

Streamer's Spotlight: Say Hello to CBS All...err... Paramount+

Now that Paramount+ is finally here, we've had a chance to dig into the details to see what makes it different. Some of our big hopes about the service weren't realized, while some others have certainly been met.

Paramount+ Has the Same Basic Interface

If you were hoping that Paramount+ would come with a flashy new app interface, you'll be sadly disappointed. That's not to say that there weren't any changes at all to the interface. For mobile device users, the company moves the main menu bar from the left side of the app to the bottom of the app. The look and feel of the menu bar are the same, however, with a "Home", "Search", "Live TV" and "More" buttons available.

Additionally, you can still use the casting feature if you have a device that pairs with casting, such as Google Chromecast.

New Live TV Options Added

Here's the most exciting addition to Paramount+: More live TV options! Previously, the only live TV available through CBS All Access was your local CBS channel. Now, however, the live connection includes CBS, CBS News, CBS Sports HQ, and ET Live. It's possible that ViacomCBS will add more live TV channels to the mix in the future, making this section full of potential.

And of Course, Way More Content

The thing many of us were looking for has also materialized. Paramount+ now includes a large selection of Paramount-branded content. The Home page is not the best place to find anything on the app, but you can go to the "Search" section to get a more legitimate category layout.

Unfortunately, you can't easily discover what's been newly added to the library. There's a "Recently added" section on the home screen, but it only shows a limited number of new content. Supposedly, the new service has over 2,500 movie titles and 30,000 TV show episodes. The app interface doesn't necessarily lend itself well to finding them easily, though.

Surprise: New Movie Releases

Here's a side benefit we'll leave you with. Paramount+ is reportedly getting new movie releases after a 45-day theatrical window. That list includes the next

Mission Impossible

movie and

A Quiet Place II

.
