What Shows Are People Watching for the First Time?

May 11, 2020

Throughout quarantine, many are reliving the familiarity of their content comfort foods and rewatching what they already know and love. But many of us are also taking this time to discover something new. This past week, Reelgood released some interesting data revealing which shows people are turning to for first-time viewing. We also have some helpful notes on what's airing this week, as well as cord-cutting news blips you don't want to miss.

Streamer's Spotlight: Time for Something New to Watch

We don't blame you if you're on your 33rd rewatch of

The Office

. But for some TV viewers, quarantine has bingeing means watching something new. Reelgood, an app that consolidates streaming services into one locale on people's devices,

at what its users have been picking up for the first time during COVID. And when it comes to what's new to watch, it appears a select few shows are getting the most attention from streamers.

A Trip to the Ozarks

Netflix is still the top source for shows that streamers are turning to during quarantine. Because of its breakout popularity, it's easy to assume that most people are watching

Tiger King.

Indeed, many are, but Reelgood found that the top spot for shows people are watching for the first time while quarantined goes to Netflix's drama series his

Ozark

.

Specifically, they saw that 8.59% of its users are turning to Ozark for their new streaming adventures. Tiger King came in a close second with 8.47%, while the long-standing Break Bad came in 3rd with 8.16% of all views.

Explaining the Netflix Domination

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has shown just how strong Netflix has been in its content development and acquisition window. Note that on Reelgood's list, you won't find any shows on Disney+. Although Disney+ ramped up to popularity fairly quickly last fall, its new content and release calendar were very delayed.

Meanwhile, Netflix has been at this for a years longer. Its content spending and planning means it has reams of content already produced and ready to go. While there may be a bump in the road for its content releases down the road, the way it organizes its content releases means it'll ride right through the quarantine with new content.

That said, the vast majority of what people are watching for the first time is older content. And again, most of that older content is on Netflix, to include shows like

Stranger Things

,

Better Call Saul

,

Parks and Recreation

, and

The Office.

HBO's content makes a good showing in things people are watching for the first time, as well, with

Game of Thrones

and

Westworld

hitting high on the list.
